Robo-bug: A rechargeable, remote-control cyborg cockroach

Image
A method for making remote controlled cyborg cockroaches has been developed by an international team lead by scientists at the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research (CPR). The system includes a tiny wireless control module that is powered by a rechargeable battery coupled to a solar cell. Despite the mechanical gadgets, the insects may move freely thanks to flexible materials and ultrathin electronics. These developments, which were published on September 5 in the academic journal npj Flexible Electronics, will contribute to the widespread use of artificial insects. In order to aid check dangerous regions or monitor the environment, scientists have been attempting to create cyborg insects, which are partially insects and partially machines. The ability to control cyborg insects remotely for extended periods of time is necessary for their use to be viable, though. This necessitates cordless, rechargeable battery-powered control of their leg segments. Nobody wants a team of robotic cock...

A dried-up arm of the Nile provides another clue to how Egyptians built the pyramids

Image
Geographers frequently go to the past for the answers to what environmental challenges our planet's warming globe will bring about in the future. The pyramids of Giza, one of the most famous man-made structures in the world, were made possible by the environment of ancient Egypt, according to a new study that was published on August 29 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The authors of the study discovered that people need the waterway to move tools and other supplies like stones and limestones to the Giza Plateau for pyramid construction on a now-dry arm of the Nile River known as the Khufu branch. Sheisha Hader, a physical geographer at the University of Aix-Marseille in France and the study's principal author, adds that the Nile was an essential resource for ancient Egypt's transportation, food, land for farming, and water supplies.                                      ...

Physicists just gifted us ‘quantum spin liquid,’ a weird new state of matter

Image
Atoms that are essentially locked in an ordered framework make up solids. On the other hand, atoms in a liquid can freely move past and around one another. But consider atoms that are continually shifting magnetic messes and remain non-frozen, similar to those in a liquid. The result is a quantum spin liquid, a hitherto unheard-of quantum strangeness state of matter. Researchers have now achieved this state in the lab by carefully manipulating atoms. On December 2, the researchers published their findings in the journal Science. For years, scientists had debated several spin liquids ideas. The project's coordinator and one of the paper's authors, Harvard University physicist Giulia Semeghini, adds, "But we really got extremely interested in this when these theorists, here at Harvard, eventually established a mechanism to actually make the quantum spin liquids." The laws of quantum mechanics can twist atoms into a variety of exotica when applied under severe circumstan...

A beginner’s guide to how cryptocurrencies work

Image
One thing is certain, regardless of where you are in the cryptocurrency trend: These digital currencies are having a significant impact on the general public and don't seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Notably, El Salvador recently made bitcoin legal tender, and Eric Adams, the incoming mayor of New York, wants to make the city a hub for cryptocurrencies. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, nearly 90% of Americans have heard of cryptocurrencies, despite the fact that only 16% of Americans claim to have invested in, traded, or used it. In general, proponents of cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (where individuals can conduct financial transactions with one another without the intervention of a middleman or centralized body like a bank) contend that these platforms are transparent and anonymous at the same time, both of which are advantageous. The foundation of all cryptocurrencies, the blockchain, is the key to realizing this ambition. Every transaction...

Meta gave a sneak peek of one of its first VR wearables

Image
The platform Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is in the early phases of developing haptic gloves to put the virtual world at our fingertips, despite the fact that no such technology is now commercially accessible. The company recently stated that these gloves have been in development for the past seven years and that there are still a few more steps to be taken. The wearer of these gloves would be able to interact with and control the virtual environment as well as experience it similarly to how one would experience the real world. The gloves would be used in conjunction with an AR or VR headset by the wearer. Two users may be seen engaging in remote thumb-wrestling in a video that Meta put on a blog. They can see a pair of robotic hands reflecting their own hands' movements in their virtual reality (VR) headsets. They should be able to feel every squeeze and twitch of their partner's hand while wearing their gloves. Sean Keller, the research director at Meta Reality Lab, stat...

MIT Scientists Discover That Computers Can Understand Complex Words and Concepts

Image
Statistics are used by models for natural language processing to gather a lot of data regarding word meanings. When using a term, Humpty Dumpty declares scornfully in "Through the Looking Glass," "It means simply what I select it to signify – neither more nor less." The question is whether you can make words signify so many diverse things, Alice responds. The meanings of words have long been the focus of study. The human mind must navigate a complicated network of flexible, specific information in order to understand their significance. A more recent problem with word meaning has now been discovered. The ability of artificially intelligent computers to emulate human cognitive processes and grasp language is a topic of research. The answer to that question has recently been published in a research that was conducted by scientists from UCLA, MIT, and the National Institutes of Health. The research, which was published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, shows that ...

LED Smart Lighting System Based on Quantum Dots More Accurately Reproduces Daylight

Image
Quantum dot-based smart lighting innovations are more effective than traditional LEDs, have superior color saturation, and can dynamically mimic daylight conditions in a single light. Quantum dots, tiny semiconductors that are just a few billionths of a meter in size, have been used by researchers to create intelligent, color-controllable white light devices that are more effective than standard LEDs, have better color saturation, and can dynamically replicate daylight conditions in a single light. The next-generation smart lighting system was created by researchers from the University of Cambridge by combining nanotechnology, color science, cutting-edge computer techniques, electronics, and a novel production process. The researchers discovered that they could replicate daylight more faithfully by employing more than the three fundamental illumination hues present in conventional LEDs. The new design's first testing revealed better color reproduction, a broader operational range t...

Websites use URLs to track you. Here’s how to stop them.

Image
Websites may monitor you in a variety of ways, as you may well be aware. It explains why a single search for furniture might result in many web adverts for shelves, tables, and chairs for months on end. 10 helpful Google Search features you should be aware of You may not be aware that third parties may monitor you using the URL or address of the website you're viewing; this is done by adding extra, seemingly random letters and digits to otherwise straightforward addresses that finish in.com, for example. There are solutions to stop URL-based trackers and safeguard your online privacy, just like there are for the other different kinds of trackers. Knowing what you're dealing with and how to prevent any snoopers is crucial when it comes to digital security as always. Workings of tracking URLs Try using Google to look for a product you wish to buy, then click on one of the adverts that display at the top of the results page. There's a considerable probability that the site URL...
